In the last two years my children have mastered reading, and a vast new world is now theirs. I found this step in their life particularly amazing.
I do love books, and I will lament that I do not read as much or as often as I would like. Unless on holidays reading is the stolen time between going to bed and falling asleep, and I often find myself having to re-read the last page or so as I was previously reading with one eye open!
Only fiction books are listed on this page. The first book listed has been with me for over 20 years. I re-visit it every couple of years, and each time I read it I come away with a new learning. The other books listed have made me smile or laugh or cry - they are the books I'll revisit.
- I Heard the Owl call my Name - Margaret Craven
- Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Albom - I bought this book in Angaston SA, and by the time we arrived back home the book was finished, the tissue box was empty and my eyes were puffy and red
- A Taste for It, Upside Down Inside Out, and Spin the Bottle - Monica McInerney - these three books contain my loves; Clare Valley, Ireland, Melbourne, Food & Romance - infact all her books are great
- A Thousand Days in Venice - Marlena de Blasi
- Dance Upon the Air, Heaven & Earth, and Face the Fire - Nora Roberts - a trilogy
- The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
- Heritage - Judy Nunn - a poignant read and tribute to migrants and survivors of WWII atrocities (I will always admire & miss you)
- Bright Flows the River - Taylor Caldwell
- The Pursuit of Happiness - Douglas Kennedy
- The Mirror - Lynn Freed
- The Sensualist - Barbara Hodgson - a BEAUTIFUL book
- Chocolat, Blackberry Wine, and Five Quarters of the Orange - Joanne Harris
- Precious Bodily Fluids - Charles Waterstreet
- Looking for Alibrandi - Melina Marchetti
- The Red Tent - Anita Diamant
- Like water for Chocolate - Laura Esquivel
- Patron Saint of Liars - Ann Patchett
- Blessed are the Cheesemakers - Sarah-Kate Lynch
- Tully - Paulina Simons
- Perfect Couple - Derek Hansen - this was special, devoured on a decadent day under the Robinia tree with a bottle of champagne
- Welcome to Temptation - Jennifer Cruise
- Delicious - Nicky Pellegrino
- Uncle Tungsten's Diary - Oliver Sacks - reminds me why I studied chemistry
- Summer at Mount Hope - Rosalie Ham
- Lambs of God - Marele Day
- Resistance - Anita Shreve - another wonderful author; all her books are great
- The Olive Sisters - Amanda Hampson
- Pomegratate Soup - Marsh Mehran
- The Mistress of Spices - Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
And novels and short sotries by the following authors are always good, though I will say some of them I have not visited for more than 15 years
- Guy de Maupassant
- Roald Dahl
- Gustave Flaubert
- Zelda Fitzgerald
- Emile Zola
- Anais Nin
- W Somerset Maugham
I should also add that my husband takes great delight in buying books for me - he chooses them perfectly. I will say that his latest purchase "A Guide to Belly Dancing" had me quite worried until I realized that it was fiction!
Jan 2008
I don't seem to have read as many wonderful books over the past 18 months, so the list I add is small. But then again, considering that the list above is based on decades of reading,...
- The Fisherman's Daughter - Molly Jackson - captured the small villages of the Highlands
- A Special Relationship - Douglas Kennedy
- The Gypsy Tearoom - Nicky Pellegrino - food, love, life, you could smell the bread and for days I craved pizza, and then we made some!
